Dimensions of Criminology A Study of Crime Essay

When examining criminal acts one will find that there many aspect which contributes to the actually crime itself. The expert have for years sought to discover the root cause of crime. Some of the primitive research considered the facial features, the contour of the skull as the sources of the criminal behavior. In addition, there are researchers who believe that the offender environment is a determining factor in their criminal behavior. This is to say that offender who was raised poor or lived in a crime-infested area will be impacted by these factors. This paper will examine several of the factors that make up the dimension of criminology. Goring was not able to find any conclusive evident to prove Lombroso theory. Moreover, researchers such as Ernest Hooton an American Anthropologist was critical of Lombroso theory. Hoo ton believed that criminal tendencies were a result of their environment not physical attributes. â€Å"William Sheldon incorporated psychological traits into his biological theory which make a connection between criminal behaviors to somatotypes or body types† (Conklin, 2010, p. 106). Sheldon’s theory suggest that three dissimilar body types are includes in this theory, Endomorphs, Ectomorphs, Mesomorphs. â€Å"Endomorphs - are soft and laid back, who tended not to be delinquent same as Ectomorphs - who are described as thin, fragile. Whereas, Mesomorphs which are described as muscular, active, and aggressive tends to be twice to be delinquent† (Conklin, 2010, p. 106). His theory was criticized because secondary research proves to have inconsistent results. The result was inconsistent in part because the research failed to include variable such as environmental influences. Sheldon theory much like Lombroso tends to stereotype people with specific physical attributes.
